Katie currently teaches private voice and piano lessons and serves as Artistic Music Director of the Oakland Jazz Choir and Music Director at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church, and has recently taught at The Jazzschool in Berkeley. She has many years of music teaching, directing, and performance experience, having worked as music director, conductor, piano accompanist, and arranger for various jazz, pop, classical choral, acappella, and theatrical groups, and having sung and recorded with multiple jazz, R&B/funk/soul, gospel, Afro-Latin,and musical theatre ensembles in the Bay Area and beyond.
Katie holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from San Jose State University with an emphasis in Improvised Music Studies, including jazz, pop/rock/gospel, as well as Afro-Caribbean and other world music traditions. She also holds a music degree from vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson's School for Music Vocations in Iowa, and an M.A. in Drama from San Francisco State University.
In addition to her extensive work as a musician, she is also a trained actor and has performed with various theatre companies in the Bay Area. Some of her most recent theatrical roles include: Lisa in Private Eyes, Red in Late: A Cowboy Song, Ann in Balm in Gilead, Dorine in Tartuffe, Lady Blues in Torch Song Trilogy, and Pepita in Feydeau's Fit to be Tried.
When she's not teaching music or onstage, Katie loves spending time with friends and family, going out to see live music and theatre, curling up with a good book, constructing (and deconstructing...) original theatre performance pieces, rocking out at the piano and singing alone or with friends, dancing (badly), laughing (loudly), coming up with random artsy-fartsy projects, making a mess in the kitchen, pouring spirits tastings and instigating general mischief & merriment at St. George Spirits distillery, discovering new local restaurants and bars, and adventuring & relaxing with her most amazing fiance, Marcel.
